Joy Yang

Art Director

Joy Yang was born in Laos and is one of eleven children. Her family fled their homeland and migrated to the United States in 1980, hopeful for a new life. At an early age, Yang was inspired by her mother who told visual stories through beautiful fabric tapestries. Growing up, she experienced art vicariously through her brothers who made their living as a musician, carpenter and an architect. As a high school sophomore, Yang found her passion and knew her future profession would be in the arts. She followed her heart and earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and received her master’s degree in Mass Communication shortly after. Upon graduation, Yang was offered a web designer position in the College of Arts and Communication at UW-Whitewater. In the next 15 years, she helped expand and support UW-Whitewater marketing initiatives serving in multiple roles from graphic designer to art director to assistant director. Before leaving UW-Whitewater, she co-developed a Portfolio Assistance Program to help design and advertising students to properly prepare for a successful job interview, which is an area of philanthropic interest for Yang. Joy is currently Brand Manager at Standard Process, where she leads the creative team and drives the creative and brand strategies. Yang splits her free time serving on the College of Arts and Communication Dean’s Advisory Board, chauffeuring her children to and from sporting events, reading, and playing golf. She and her husband, Sha, and their five children, Catherine (18), Caleigh (15), Cara (11), Claire (9) and Caleb (5), live in Whitewater, Wisc.
